Clinton Hill Apartment
New York City, USA
This Clinton Hill apartment combination joins two apartments in a former mansion and its extension. The spaces converge at a split level threshold, the meeting point between old and still-older building, and new and still-newer renovation. Working with clients attuned to detail, the design focuses on clean alignments and a restrained yet inviting material palette. Technical attention was paid to thermal and acoustic comfort, and to maximizing functionality within a constrained footprint. Custom millwork adds generous storage throughout, including floor-to-ceiling storage in the living room and a shallow vanity in the new primary bathroom.
Construction uncovered surprises, including a small misalignment between the two original units and the discovery of a structural wall. These constraints redirected the mechanical strategy. HVAC was tucked into a newly revealed ceiling cavity. The water closet found its place in this reworked zone and the radiator was cleanly integrated into the wall. Each shift became an opportunity to refine the design. The finished home is relaxed but exacting, shaped by an irregular envelope and defined by thoughtful, ready to be lived in details.
